About the Department
The Life and Health Sciences (SVS) Department boasts subject-matter expertise in fundamental fields of study related to biology and associated sciences, with core subjects (biochemistry and structural biology; molecular, cellular, and integrative biology; molecular, quantitative, and functional genetics; ecology; evolutionary genetics; genomics; integrative physiology; and metabolic science) and fields that belong to the category of applied science (microbiology; plant physiology and pathologies; plant and animal breeding; nutritional science and nutrition for public health; physiology and metabolism; toxicology and human eating behaviors; ecological engineering; conservation biology; animal behavior; agroecology and territorial metabolism; industry-specific analysis; and livestock production development).
This vast expertise in the field of biology and its direct applications enables the SVS Department to make substantial contributions to the teaching and research conducted at AgroParisTech and Paris-Saclay University. It is committed to continuing to do so, while never losing sight of the scientific, technical, and societal changes that shape the world and the institution’s strategy.
Teaching Activities
The SVS Department is involved in the curricula of all three years of AgroParisTech’s engineering program, both years of AgroParisTech’s Paris-Saclay University master’s degree programs (Biosphere Graduate School), as well as in Post-Master’s, Ph.D., and continuing education programs. In particular, the Department coordinates or jointly coordinates several majors and master’s degree programs at AgroParisTech.
It is involved in nine jointly coordinated majors, a number of independently offered course units, and 15 jointly coordinated master’s programs, in addition to the course units and master’s programs for which it has primary responsibility. It is also involved in two Post-Master’s programs, including the Bridges, Waters and Forests Corps of Engineers program (MS PAPDD), and it plays an important role in Ph.D. programs (very active faculty) and in regular continuing education projects.

Research Units
In terms of research, the SVS Department participates in joint research units across its fields of expertise, in collaboration with INRAE, Paris-Saclay University, Sorbonne University, the National Museum of Natural History, and the CNRS.
Research affiliations are primarily organized around three key research centers:
-
INRAE’s Versailles-Grignon research center;
-
IDEEV (Institute for the Diversity, Ecology, and Evolution of the Living World);
-
INRAE’s Jouy-en-Josas research center.
